How to Support Wireless Connections in a Windows 2003 Domain

Wireless connections are becoming more popular, and businesses can offer users who travel a way to connect to the Windows 2003 domain. To offer wireless connections to a Windows 2003, the client needs a wireless router connected to the network. Several home and small office routers are affordable solutions to offering wireless connections. Once installed, your users can connect to the domain using their account.

      Step 1

Connect your router's power cord to the wall and wait for it to boot. Some routers, such as Linksys, have lights that indicate they are booting.

      Step 2

Use a cable to connect your Windows 2003 domain server to the wireless router. If the domain server is already connected to the network, use the cable to connect the wireless router to the existing network router. You can "chain" routers on a network, so the wireless router remains only for wireless connections.

      Step 3

Open a web browser and type the router's IP address into the navigation text box. For most routers, the IP address is 192.168.1.1. Enter the router's administration password. The two common default passwords are "password" and "admin."

      Step 4

Click the "Wireless" link in the router's console. Some routers may label the link "Wireless Settings." Enter a network ID for the wireless connection. This can be any friendly name for the network.

      Step 5

Select "Enable" for the wireless security settings. Select a wireless encryption type. The safest encryption type for a small network is "WPA-2." Enter a password for the wireless connection. This password is used by your client machines when they attempt to connect to the wireless network. Press the "Save" button to save the settings. Your network is now ready to receive wireless connections.
